About
Rednote Records (pronounced “Ri-’kordz”) was founded in 1998 at 1215 Villa
Place in Nashville Tennessee. The entire first floor of the house was
set up for recording. We managed to have a two inch twenty-four track
Sony tape machine matched up with a twenty-four track MCI console. We
had some really cool vintage tube mics and everything necessary to make
great recordings.
One problem…the engineer, who will remain nameless and owned all the
gear, was crazy and self destructive. awww hell. What are you gonna do.
We managed to get music onto two rolls of tape before everything
imploded.
(I’ll get those recordings up as soon as I get the transfers to digital
back.)
The house on Villa Place was originally occupied by a horn player and
had music notes welded into the ornamental iron railings on the steps
leading up to the house. These notes were painted red and the railings
were given to me when the new owner purchased the house and we moved
our operation a half block away and started recording with Brandon
Henegar. We can say his name. We like Brandon, who doesn’t?
While at Villa Place we put together “The Symptoms of Depression”
featuring Doug Summers and Hal Spangler, AKA Afraid of Hawk and Ray
Nyack, with the fabulous drum and percussive work of Noel Rose, and the
infinitely creative guitar work of Chris Alford. We had a grand time
rehearsing, playing miscellaneous dives around Nashville and recording the
“Lucky Doug with the Symptoms” and “Ray Nyack (Hal Spangler) with the
Symptoms” records. We recorded those two records at FJM Studios in
Dayton Ohio. The engineer was Joe Winner and he did a great job on the
recording and mixing of this project. Joe Miller who owned the studio
has since passed away, as they say. I’m guessing he’s recording some of
the best music ever. We are in eternity now.
That’s all I’m going to say about Rednote for now. I’ll write a little
more later…. stay tuned….. I mean it….stay tuned. It’s important.

We recorded at FJM studios and were in mixdown at the time Joe Miller “passed away” and we’re trying to locate our tapes. Everything in the studio went to probate. Everybody was so bummed out when it happened then our guitar player quit and finally the band broke up. Here we are 8 years later and we’re all freakin out because those were the best tracks any of us have ever recorded and we don’t know where to start looking. We’ve been googling Joe Winner, FJM, Joe Miller and that’s how we came across this site. Anything you have that may help us locate his widow or Joe Winner would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
The band was “Unbound” from Cincinnati.

Sorry about the delay. Writers block. Sometimes I wonder what the purpose of all these words are. Two posts back, they asked about FJM studios. It was a cool place to record and unfortunately I also lost track of Joe Winner and have been unable to get in touch.
After moving to Edgehill, after the demise of the “Symptoms of Depression”, Rednote Records started a band called “Axolotl” (rhymes with bottle). The record that came out of that situation is called “Dog Headed Monster”. You can find it on this page. It was produced by Brandon Henegar. He also played the guitar parts and many of the other instruments that we recorded. Most of the drums were done by Noel Rose. We also worked with a great drummer and friend named Chris. You’ll have to forgive me, it’s been a long time, I’ve forgotten his last name.
This record started out being recorded out of the trunk of Brandon’s car when Rednote was still on Villa Place. He would show up and drag out his computer and some microphones and we would put down the guitar vocals and get the arrangement together.
I’ll post the rest of this discussion later. Peace for now and always. It is always now.
